John Galliano has presented an alarmingly sadistic collection for his spring couture line for Dior. His work is a response to the rioting and general unrest in Paris during the summer. He also resorts to digging back into Paris’s history, looking as far as the French Revolution. This violent edge to his collection comes as no surprise as the men’s shows in Millan have also carried this aggressive look. Galliano’s collection is trend right in the attitude of his collection, but his execution of the collection appears stale…
The look for the models was inspired by Marie Antoinette. Their hair is piled high on their heads of frizzy bleached hair pinned with red bobby pins. Faces were smeared with white paste, and eyes were circled with red and black. The makeup was comical looking and actually detracted from the severity of the clothing.
Red was the core color for the collection. Every outfit utilized red in one way or another. One of John’s favorite ways to work red into each ensemble is to simply splatter ‘blood’ all over the garment. Although I can appreciate the art-school feeling of his work, he should be beyond that by now. Check out the blood smeared chocker (a possible DIY project?).
Trend statement of the show=Despite how bad this show looks, red will find a way to be stylish. And leather is already in, so perhaps it will continue to be in.
24 carat gold lame. I’m with you, Amy- the red pearls and shrouded heads were sympols far too obvious. Not to mention the designs just plain sucked
OK, this was posted months ago, but I’ve just found it. Fashionable or not, what Galliano’s done here is insensitive. People did have their heads lopped off, and that’s a bad thing. Let’s save it for Halloween.
