China Street Style Shanghai

I recently got back from a short trip to Beijing and Shanghai. Street style in China is definitely much more restricted than it is in Japan, but some are trying to take it to the next level, one way or another. As we all have heard ad nauseum China is the next big thing, after being there I tend to agree. However, as seen in the image above, this couple from Shanghai is trying a bit too hard. Notice the expression of disbelief on the face of the umbrella vendor.

Rebecca Pulver’s brass knuckle styled jewelry pieces are currently being shown at Honeymilk. Pictured here is her ‘Fist Full of Bunnies’ ring. She also has a fierce horse ring that can do some serious damage in a girl fight.

I love these two top pieces by Natalia Brilli, I saw the handbag at Barney’s last week. The leather is super soft, and the seashell charms are incredibly mysterious. The piece to our bottom left is a seashell bag by Judy Geib.

Collection Craze : Pant Pot-Holders

Sunday, April 16th, 2006
4.16 pants.jpg
Here are my most recent additions to my pant pot-holder collection. I’ve only got 5 in my collection so far, so if anyone has a tip on a source, please let me know! I managed to pick these up while flea market shopping in Kutztown, PA this weekend. There seems to have been a phenomenon in the 50′s and 60′s when his and hers pant pot-holders in woven and crochet constructions became popular (in the picture above the left one is ‘his’ indicated by the fly and ‘hers’ is on the right indicated by the apron). It doesn’t seem that any pots have actually been held using the pieces in my collection, they must have been purely decorative.

Trend Alert: It’s over…

It’s over…

****update***Sorry Ladies. Flats never look good no matter how good your legs are. Now that it’s warm, the leggings have no reason for being. Rather than flats, I recommend a nice sexy pair of towering pumps. I’m salivating over a very sexy pair at (gasp!), Steve Madden. I’m developing a love for grey suede pumps. A Dries Van Noten pair from a few seasons ago got me interested.

If you follow the advice concerning the flats, then why would you want to cover your legs with dodgy leggings? Everyone in New York is wearing them, the cute and uncute all have them on.  Be fashion forward and try something new!

Please note that although the model shown on the right is wearing Converse shoes, no harm is meant to Converse. I support both their low and high tops (especially their shimmery ones available at Barney’s).

Silhouettes…

Silhouettes are trending at the moment; I highly recommend doing some DIY projects with a quick snapshot and some construction paper. Or check out the master of sihouettes, Kara Walker(as piece shown below). She is having an exhibit coming up at the Metropolitan Museum of Art soon (starting March 31st).

I stopped into Lost and Found (133 N 3rd St, Philadelphia) it’s a great small boutique located in Old City. The shop carries a lot of small designers which are very affordable and there is also a good selection of vintage clothing pieces and accessories. One of my favorite new jewelry pieces they carried are these super cute retro-styled necklaces by Bijoux Luck. I also picked up an Obey t-shirt and a Brown Sound gingham shirt for my boyfriend. I’m really into their sharp styling of their men’s shirts, and the gingham looks super springy.

Sketchbook Style…

Monday, April 3rd, 2006
4.2collage.jpg Sketchbook style is coming back in a strong way. This detail, shown on the left is from a t-shirt that I love which can be found at Fred Flare. It takes the nautical look in a playful art school way, rather that being to pirate-ish which can tend to be way 2002. In the same sketchbook vein, the Mushroom Girls Virus is putting out a book which all graphic lovers should check out. Their trippy drawings are gorgeous and very inspiring. Also worth mentioning are the spring collection of hand printed cards available from Little Paper Planes. And lastly, my textile fave the design house of Marimekko presents the beautiful fabric shown in the lower right which is by artist Maija Louekari. It’s been a while since it’s been cool to have girls faces on things, so let’s embrace it. Everyone should go draw a girl right now, it will be so trend-right ;)

Midas Touch…

yellow_white.jpg
Inspired by the warm spring weather and Martha Stewart’s Wedding magazine, we’ve changed things up at Seamster’s and we have gone yellow+white. As always I have two things on my mind, trims and sugary snacks…I love the way these ribbons look. I highly recommend going to M&J Trimming 1008 Sixth Avenue New York) and purchasing a handful. Try putting a cute yellow gingham ribbon tied in a bow around your pony-tail or around a present for a friend. Or pick up some of M&J’s beautiful hand dyed silk ribbons, they have great color names and are absolutely gorgeous. My favorite for this month is their mustard yellow silk trims which they have entitled Midas Touch!
