Anglomania at the Met

7_26_anglomania1.jpg

This weekend we went to the Met to check out the current shows. Anglomania, is an exhibit that attempts to examine how British fashion bore it’s roots from the English traditions. The exhibit features some stunning pieces from the likes of ,Hussein Chalayan (see above), Galiano (for Dior, below) as well as Alexander McQueen. The show seemed a little less cohesive than previous fashion exhibits that we’ve seen, such as the Chanel/Lagerfeld show. There seemed to be too many conflicting ideas going on in the presentation for it to be interperted clearly. Some people were left wondering what old british people were doing wearing Vivianne Westwood tee’s? Of course art doesn’t intrinsically cater to everyone, a museum’s job is to make it accessible and understandible, this is where the Met fell short this time. If you would like something to do in an air conditioned environment, it’s definately worth checking out, but be prepared to read the long descriptions in each room if you really want to get it.

Digby and Iona…

7.23_ring.jpg
I was getting my fringe trimmed at Commune (the cutest hair salon in the world) and came across some new pieces by Aaron Ruff of Digby and Iona. Instantly I hauled Leo and myself over to The Market NYC located at 268 Mulberry Street (between Prince & Houston) to buy the ’square jewel ring’ from the artist directly (at a modest discount from the retail price). I love this piece (the second in from the left), it’s like a ring that a grandma would wear, but so sartorial/clever with the slab of faceted silver rather than a gaudy gem. I’m a big fan of Aaron’s work; you might be familiar with him from a write-up in NYLON mag a bunch of months ago for his pendant of a couple making-out.

Recently I discovered the work of Stina Persson (thanks to Love Made Visible, a great resource for all things beautiful). I’ve been super into illustrations lately. tina’s work is refreshing to me because of the edgy look to her ladies and clean approach to mixed media (I love the cut out shapes which are inspired by Mexican ceremonial papers).

Project Runway…the blue sheet incident

7.23_project_runway.jpg
Okay, normally I stay away from posting pictures of myself on the blog. Today I have made an exception due to my need to report face-to-face, concerning the monstrosity I was accosted by while strolling along 34th street. What did I find in the Macy’s window, but a big blue sheet! My own outfit is more innovative than that crap. Did the project runway judges forget that the first project was supposed to be innovative? Keith Michael took one of the most cliched sillhouettes of all time (every fashion design student thinks they are the first to create a halter dress) and he had the nerve to make it out of FABRIC! This is looking like it is going to be one harshly reviewed Project Runway season, and also what is going on with the Project Runway website? I would definitely say ‘Auf wiedersehen’ to their web designer.

Knit Trees at Treehouse…

This weekend while exploring the areas off the beaten track in Brooklyn, I discovered the work of Kim Hamlin showcased at Treehouse. Kim’s knit trees are genius. Check out her homepage for more pics of her knit forest. Kim is also the author and designer behind Posh Pooches, a how-to book on knitting dog sweaters. Treehouse is located at 430 graham ave, just a few short blocks from the graham ave L-train stop. The store is co-founded by Rebecca Lee, a jewelry designer and proprietor extraordinaire of Becky Lee jewelry and fashion designer Siri Wilson who creates a one-of-a-kind line Sirius*. Their shop is an unusual combination of cute crafting books, small designer wares, vintage clothing and also functions as a craft school and design resource center.

As you know I love all things Scandinavian, Klaus’s art comes from the now defunct agent form, and reminds me of a cross between bjorn winblad’s and vera neumann’s art.

Fall Fashion…

It’s super hot and humid in Philly this weekend, but I’ve got my mind set on Fall clothing already. I’m a glutton for anything that is heather grey and here are two great cozy pieces from La Garconne (my favorite site for things that I can’t afford :) ) Pictured on the left we have a sweater dress by Phillip Lim. This dress is a great way to get some layering mileage out of the shirt dresses that everyone bought during the Spring. I’m also loving the cool slouchy grandma sweater shown on the right.
