Anglomania at the Met

This weekend we went to the Met to check out the current shows. Anglomania, is an exhibit that attempts to examine how British fashion bore it’s roots from the English traditions. The exhibit features some stunning pieces from the likes of ,Hussein Chalayan (see above), Galiano (for Dior, below) as well as Alexander McQueen. The show seemed a little less cohesive than previous fashion exhibits that we’ve seen, such as the Chanel/Lagerfeld show. There seemed to be too many conflicting ideas going on in the presentation for it to be interperted clearly. Some people were left wondering what old british people were doing wearing Vivianne Westwood tee’s? Of course art doesn’t intrinsically cater to everyone, a museum’s job is to make it accessible and understandible, this is where the Met fell short this time. If you would like something to do in an air conditioned environment, it’s definately worth checking out, but be prepared to read the long descriptions in each room if you really want to get it.

I also went last week to see it because I am huge fan of Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood. I wanted more, I felt like I was given a taste, but than it fell short of quinching my desires.

I think the concept was interesting, but when put together it was kind of a mishmash. Also I wish the signage was more focused or at least if the dresses were numbered in the exhibition we could have found them easier.
