Not being american, I have always felt that marc jacobs has been overhyped, especially by the american media (though he's better than many of his peers). I was really dissapointed by his a/w collection- the ysl references were really derivative. ESpecially when others, say for example prada sent such an interesting spring collection that nodded to the fourties-by-seventies ysl. i also agree with lizz because i thought marc jacobs spring collection was an inspired effort.

i have to say that i was completely surprised too, it was all just so unexpected, and marc jacobs is hard to dislike, :) so i don't know what to think either. it does seem all straight out of another era, with no other interludes to spin it...

I have to disagree with the ladies above...i think Jacobs continually pushes the envelope even if it means radically changing where he was going and starting off in a different direction.

I think he creates something fresh and he makes high fashion at times look wearable. I think his color palette was rich and when everyone else is catching up to his layered look he is turning around completely and trying something different.

Lizz and Lena, your words are so true...I'm really not getting this whole YSL old lady look. It's too vintage for my taste.

marc jacobs is derivative and a vintage-vulture and a classic case of the king having no clothes: no one will call him out on it.
that having been said, i loved his show last fall when he pushed the envelope with new volumes and actually appeared to be a designer. Having seen the show he just did, i guess one of his assistants took over last season (and has probably been fired for setting too high a standard) : this season mj appears to be thumbing through the sears catalogue circa 1966.
blech.

this show surprised me... but i can't really figure out how to articulate my thoughts on it... i can't see myself wanting to wear most of these looks. maybe it's referencing an era and style that i have no connection to. but MJ knows what he's doing, so probably i just haven't caught on yet.
