I’m loving Etro’s fall collection. The colors and richness of the velvets reminded me of what’s going on at the store Geminola in the West Village. I stopped in the other day and was overjoyed to see dresses grafted together mixing the top of one dress, with the bottom of another. This shop is one of my favorites in NY, it’s located on 41 Perry St. It carries a plethora of reconstructed vintage party dresses which are overdyed and trimmed up with wild touches of color. Their website does not do their store justice, so try to avoid checking out this link.

About a week and a half ago when Kara Janx was booted off of the show I was definitely upset, not so much that she was kicked off but that Santino the dufus got to stay on. The fact of the matter is that he’s not that talented, yeah he like to throw trim on everything and goes overboard, but he’s not likeable nor is he a nice person, on any level. He has very little respect for others to boot. Before this turns into a rant I’d like to return the focus to Kara. Despite the fact that for the majority of the show I didn’t really like most of the outfits she designed she did manage to come up with a few inspired pieces including outfit for Santino. Regardless, she was the designer to show at Fashion Week but will not be shown during last episode of Project Runway since she has been eliminated. From what I’ve heard and the few things I’ve seen her collection was definitely a strong one and perhaps better than the rest. I guess it’s easier to take risks when you have nothing to lose. There’s an informative interview with her at Andy’s Blog (a producer for Bravo). Below are some of the looks from her show, I really like the hats!

You can also find more of her things, though I think they’re a little dated now, at www.karajanx.com

Canadian Irina Lazareanu is my new favorite on the catwalk, up until this point I haven’t seen much of her, but it seems as though this is her year to own the runway.

Hmmm…Turlie is fighting me on my Asian invasion prediction, but I really think there is a strong possibility of some Asian beauties popping up in the Fall collections. Du Juan (upper right) has definitely been getting the most face time, but Ai Tominaga (upper left) was a strong presence at Ellie Saab. I’ve also got my eye on Yoon Ae (left), from Daryl K’s 2005 collection.
In the early 90′s Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, and Cindy Crawford, rulled the runway. Now we have passed another major grouping of modells i.e. Gemma Ward, Kate Moss, Daria W, and Giselle. Who are the next big faces going to be?
Leo and I are predicting that there may be a strong Asian posse hitting the runway this season. What do you think?

What has Riccardo Tisci done to his models? The faux lace glued to their faces looks a bit like a flesh eating disease. I don’t really understand his need to mess with their faces, the collection was strong…and if anything this styling mistake takes away from the look of his collection. For a better use of lace as a styling implement see Gaultier’s usage, where the lace looks more like a stray hair rather than a full blown skin condition.

In the styling war between hair and makeup, the tresses had the upper hand in this years spring couture shows. Lacroix, Chanel, and Gaultier all got the memo. Gaultier shoved random pieces of trim into the up-dos of his models (I think that Gaultier caught a glimpse of Givenchy’s faux lace styling disaster and decided to throw a touch of lace onto Du Juan’s forehead, as shown in the upper left). Chanel (bottom left) handled this styling concept with the most control, the metal flowers and garnishes looked purposeful and added tremendously to the overall look of the show. Lastly we have Lacroix (bottom right) whose look is overdone, but that is what the house is known for. So, I guess, it’s okay.

Before stepping out last evening I took some time to indulge in E!’s special on the Sex and the City’s style. Although the ladies from SITC are typically well dressed, Sarah Jessica Parker did make a bad fashion decision back at the 58th Golden Globes. It’s not that Sarah Jessica Parker’s dress was awful, it just wasn’t good. And then, as I was paging through the paper this morning it all came together…
Elie Saab (dress shown on right) should have learned from SJP’s mistake, but instead he followed in Oscar de la Renta’s footsteps of shame. Elie Saab’s spring 2006 couture collection was a disaster of bugle beads and flower clumps shoved around the bust area. I’m not sure what his in is with the rest of the couture moguls, but it seems as though he needs to re-evaluate his participation in couture collections until he learns the skill of paring down to the essentials.

Lagerfield’s spring ’06 couture collection for Chanel was a perfect fit for the fashion house, little suits reigned and Karl took his usual walk with his ‘bride’ as the climax of the show. This collection was a little too typically Chanel. But perhaps all of the chaos caused by the mix-up with Resse Witherspoon’s dress at the Golden Globes is making us have a jaded eye…
Trend Statement of the show= importance on the waistline in both skirts and dresses. Perhaps this will influence some of the last minute designs for RTW fashion week!
