As some of you may know, Leo and I have a textile studio in Philadelphia. I just wanted to let you all know that our website is newly redesigned (you can see it here) and we have a video on there showing what a typical day is like at Printfresh. Enjoy!

Hi Everyone, sorry I haven’t had a chance to write for the last few days. I’ve been hard at work, I’ll be back after the weekend.

This weekend I dropped into Vagabond (one of my favorite boutiques in Philly) and I finally got to see this Mociun dress in person. I love how feed-sack inspired it is, and the large scale blackbird print is gorgeous.

Printfresh…

Lately I’ve had a lot of people asking me what it is that I do during my days. And my answer to that is, I direct a textile swatch studio in Philadelphia called Printfresh. Many of you are probably not familiar with this aspect of the fashion industry. The gist of it is that when apparel companies need artwork for their garments and want a fresh look from outside their artwork department they turn to swatch studios who come and show their work. It’s a great way for apparel companies to look at artwork, select pieces that suit their needs, and send it off to their production facilities right away (cutting down on lengthy artwork development stages).

All of the artwork that we as well as other swatch studios create is one of kind a kind and only sold once, this ensures that no two apparel companies will have the same artwork on their garments.

The sales end of the business is in the form of on-site appointments and the several trade shows that happen a few times per year. The two most important shows are Direction in New York and Premier Vision (Indigo) in Paris. At these shows all of the major studios, primarily from Europe and America, come together to display their work and apparel companies send their designers to shop for inspiration/artwork. This is the origin of a good proportion of the artwork that you see in stores these days.

At Printfresh we have a great team of talented artists and designers who create our original artwork. We create prints through drawing in Photoshop/Illustrator or by hand. We then print them directly onto fabric on our huge digital printer (see below right, it’s just in front of the window) or we silk screen them (see below left). We also create intricate embroidery designs (see above right).

(Please note that we work only with major corporations. If you are interested in viewing our designs, please understand that you are on your own for production, we only sell the art.)

Deep Sleep…

This weekend Leo and I went to check out a new men’s wear shop on 3rd Street that I totally love called Deep Sleep. It’s merchandise is slightly hip-hop inspired (BTW-hip-hop t’s are taking over whether we like it or not), and the store reminds me a bit of Colette in Paris. They also have an art gallery in the upstairs which is worth checking out. There is an exhibit by Carina Romano showing at the moment (the shot above is a piece from the show).

Witching Hour Knives Don\'t Have Your Back Cansei de Ser Sexy
Lately I’ve been working like crazy, and while designing I’ve been listening to tons of music. Although I typically write about fashion, I wanted to share my new favorite bands because I always find it difficult to find new interesting music. So here are the bands/albums that I like the most at this very moment:
Broadcast: Tender Buttons+Haha Sound
Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Show Your Bones
Wolf Parade: Apologies to Queen Mary
Lady Tron: Witching Hour
Emily Haines: Knives Don’t Have Your Back
Cansei de Ser Sexy: Cansei de Ser Sexy

I love these toile de jouy slips by Free People. They are so cute and could even double as a dress if I wished. Such a nice contrast from the normal sort of lingerie you see at the typical stores.

Linda from Honeymilk has a great new site where you can all purchase her fabulous hand crafted earrings (which I have so many pairs of, all essential, totally an addiction). She also has necklaces and garments for sale as well.  This way all of you out-of-state-ers can get a glimpse of what Philly has to offer.

Zine Alert: Damian Weinkrantz

Here are some of my favorite images from Damian Weinkrantz (philadelphia’s favorite bar bouncer)’s new zine, General Truths. The sadness in the general’s eyes is so haunting. I’m totally obsessed with this zine, I keep paging through it over and over again. It’s now available at Market East (a great website jam packed with local Philly artists) for a mere $3.
