Digby and Iona…

7.23_ring.jpg
I was getting my fringe trimmed at Commune (the cutest hair salon in the world) and came across some new pieces by Aaron Ruff of Digby and Iona. Instantly I hauled Leo and myself over to The Market NYC located at 268 Mulberry Street (between Prince & Houston) to buy the ‘square jewel ring’ from the artist directly (at a modest discount from the retail price). I love this piece (the second in from the left), it’s like a ring that a grandma would wear, but so sartorial/clever with the slab of faceted silver rather than a gaudy gem. I’m a big fan of Aaron’s work; you might be familiar with him from a write-up in NYLON mag a bunch of months ago for his pendant of a couple making-out.

Knit Trees at Treehouse…

7.23_knit_tree.jpg
This weekend while exploring the areas off the beaten track in Brooklyn, I discovered the work of Kim Hamlin showcased at Treehouse. Kim’s knit trees are genius. Check out her homepage for more pics of her knit forest. Kim is also the author and designer behind Posh Pooches, a how-to book on knitting dog sweaters. Treehouse is located at 430 graham ave, just a few short blocks from the graham ave L-train stop. The store is co-founded by Rebecca Lee, a jewelry designer and proprietor extraordinaire of Becky Lee jewelry and fashion designer Siri Wilson who creates a one-of-a-kind line Sirius*. Their shop is an unusual combination of cute crafting books, small designer wares, vintage clothing and also functions as a craft school and design resource center.

Designer Alert:Twigs and Heather

I picked up a great, birch inspired, silver cuff bracelet from Twigs and Heather at the Renegade Craft sale (pictured above, top). This amazing twin sister design team’s work is inspired by nature. They use items such as twigs, acorns, maple seeds and sea glass. Each piece is handmade and one-of-a-kind, using the lost wax and natural burn out casting methods.

Park Style: Parasols

Parasols are in! I love this cute girl’s style at Renegade. I’ve been loving Mexican inspired garments for the summer. Her top is especially great because it’s embroidery is a modern version of the traditional fare. I’m all for reconstructing old Mexican muumuus; I’m actually in the process of revamping one for me. I’ll be back with pictures when the project is complete!

Golden Leather…

5_31_sodafinebag.jpg

I love this big slouchy bag which Leo and I found the other week while dropping off our Lucyology shirts to Sodafine. I know tiny bags are supposed to be cool right now, but it’s not working out for me. I bought the cutest little vintage knock-off at H&M and it’s been sitting in my room for weeks. I’m not even a high maintenance girl but I require some storage room in a bag. Emily (of Sodafine) recently has been into leather working, and these generously sized bags all have an old-timey but fashion forward appearance. Each one is a little different from the next, each has different patches and materials.

Store Alert:Ghostown

3.26 ghostown.jpg

The next time you are in Williamsburg be sure to check out Ghostown (335 Grand St, Brooklyn,NY). This haven of cool new l designers and vintage is super edgy. Owner Sara McCormack is always dressed in black from head to toe and loves heavy metal. But don’t be fooled, her store does have a softer side. She mixes the tough girl look with sweet vintage jewelry and kitschy owl home decor items.

Here is a quick Q&A with Sara:

Q: Who is your style icon?

A: Kim Gordon

Q: What is your favorite thrift store find ever?

A: An Alfred Shaheen floor length skirt with mustangs running along the bottom

Q: What accessory you can’t live without?

A: My wooden rosary, ooooh or maybe Masonic jewelry

Q: What looks cool for spring?

A: Balloon skirts and tunic hoodies

Q: What is your favorite album right now?

A: Aerial Pink-Doldrums

Store Alert: Mandate of Heaven

I checked out Mandate of Heaven located at 347 Grand St, Brooklyn NY. This super cute shop is a haven of fun. 99% of the product in this boutique is remade vintage pieces, the other 1% is comprise of ‘things to cute to cut’. The window of this shop boasts clairvoyant messages such as ‘plaid shorts are the future’ and ‘all girls love playsuits’. The dresses in this boutique are beautiful vintage finds reworked to match the sultriness of the owner. The price points are high, averaging out at $300 a piece, but they are all one of a kind which of course is priceless. Enjoy!

Update: This is their website and this is a writeup in paper magazine about the owner, Carissa.

Brokeback Brooklyn…

Monday, March 20th, 2006

Untitled-1 copy.jpgThe acclaimed Brokeback Mountain has not only diminished barriers for gay themes in film, but it has also influenced hipster street style.

Jessica Simpson caused many of us the cowboy blues by ruining fashion staples such as cowboy boots and daisy dukes. Luckily Gyllenhaal’s have the adverse reaction that Simpson’s have, and are actually able to make something cool. Thanks Jake ;) With every L stop I pass I can’t help but notice a plaid snap front shirt here and a cowboy boot there.

BTW-If you were hoping to score the shirt in the picture check out this link.

I’m back!

williamsburg 3.15.jpgHi friends, I’ve finally settled into my new work-life routine and am now able to get back to this site. I appreciate all the comments you’ve left here, even in my absence. I’m super excited about the t-shirts that we’ve made and look forward to hearing what you think about them (once we get the rest of the pictures up).
